Downtown Los Angeles has many old buildings, such as hotels, banks, theaters, etc. Nowadays, most of the buildings are used as apartment, business office, or closed and completely vacant. People usually only notice the shallow aspects of the city: The streets are heavily littered and many areas are infamous for being unsafe. In contrast, when I see decorated walls and windows of old buildings in downtown L.A., I ask myself how the streets had continued to be a beautiful city, a vibrant city full of tourists, business people, and avant garde designers. In this piece, I was hoping to convey my own abstract thoughts about I painted the old day’s downtown L.A., then layered those thoughts into photos I took from the streets.
