Jimmy Wu's profile

Toronto Wayfinding Design

Building on the success of the 'Legible Cities' movement, I developed a set of wayfinding and mapping products that draws from the official Toronto Wayfinding Strategy.
A set of illustrations depicting landmarks was also created to integrate familiarity with the maps, allowing pedestrians to easily orient themselves within their context.
The design's graphic elements, typefaces, and pictograms are inspired by the visual identity of Toronto's subway system and adapted to fit modern wayfinding standards. The final product combines the successes of wayfinding best practices around the world and the unique aesthetic of Toronto.
Station area and neighbourhood maps bring intuitive and elegantly-designed wayfinding solutions to areas outside Toronto's downtown for the first time, while also highlighting the enormous walkability potential of the suburbs.
Extra care was made towards highlighting Toronto's unique human and physical geography by accentuating features such as local business improvement areas, the city's expansive ravine system, and various neighbourhood parks.
