Fuonk Nguyen's profile

Modern Vietnamese Tribes

Vietnam is home to 92 million people with the Kinh people making up about 88% of the population. The culturally rich country comprises of 53 ethnic minority groups, celebrating diversities in language, lifestyle and dress. Dress, particularly headdresses, plays an important role in reflecting the customs of the Vietnamese minorities. The traditional headdresses reveal the unique ethnical history, beliefs, aesthetic tastes and beauty of each minority group.

This photography series builds a visual bridge between the traditional dress and contemporary fashion, allowing the elaborated adornment on the head to act as a testament to the rich Vietnamese identity worth defending in an euro-centric fashion industry.
