Scratchboard art. I've always wondered about this 'drawing method' until I saw Scott McKowen's "A Fine Line."  I was intrigued and impressed with the rather unconventional look resulting from scratching a dark board to reveal the light surface undeneath. I knew I had to try it. I experimented with the 'engraved' look (like the Edmund piece below) but felt that my strokes were somewhat restrained and almost mechanical. In the end I stuck with short, spontaneous stroke, giving a more photo-realistic look.

Sir Edmund Hillary, May 2012. I was going for the 'engraved' look here - I think I need to practise more.
Sir Graham Henry, April 2012. My second attempt at scratchboarding.
