Lutindzi Side Table

Lutindzi Side Table
I designed the Lutindzi Side table while working at Gone Rural in Swaziland to be part of the 'A New Wave" exhibition hosted by Southern Guild in Cape Town, South Africa.
Gone Rural works with more than 750 artisans in 13 groups across Swaziland, often with three generations of women from one family. By providing our women with self-employed, home-based work, we empower them with a sustainable income, while still allowing them to fulfil their traditional duties and provide care to dependents.

Working with the artisans inside of Gone Rural, but also in Swaziland as a whole, Gone Rural uses traditional materials and techniques to create contemporary designs. I worked with master weaver and trainer Zinhle Vilakati on the product development with assistance from then Gone Rural creative director, Phillipa Thorne. Wonder Dlamini worked on the soapstone base. Wonder is a Swaziland Fairtrade(SWIFT) registered soapstone carver from the Malalotja region of Swaziland. The weaver behind the table is Ganaphi Zwane. Ganaphi is one of the regular sample weavers for Gone Rural and a master of her craft.
