Cabbage Head & Bunny Button

Cabbage Head & Bunny Button
 The Nine Day Journey
Cabbage Head and Bunny Button, also referred to as Omega 35, were created from a series of tests in a research facility on Vasilevsky Island in St. Petersburg Russia that included the injection of Protein 47. Matt Wilson, head of the research team for T.E.NT.S. (The Evolution Nearing Technical Success), discovered a plant in the jungles of Africa know as Noc plants that excreted a poison with special biological properties. Through a series of classified tests with the Noc plant and human subjects, Matt and his partner, Troy Marks, uncovered a muscle enhancing property in the Noc plant, which they would name Protein 47.These tests would result in the creation of Cabbage Head and later on Bunny Button. Months later Cabbage Head escaped from his cell and came into contact with Bunny Button. Bunny Button nested itself in the enormous belly of Cabbage Head, using the belly button as a means of contact to the outside world. Due to the constant evolving properties of the Protein 47, Bunny Button lost its hind legs and became attached to Cabbage Head permanently.

This sculpture was a means to explore a medium that I’ve longed to work in. From the start I knew I wanted to sculpt something big. My friend, Allen Sutton, has a sketchbook full of creative and highly detailed characters ranging from humans to alien oddities. Being familiar with his characters I requested to sculpt the character Cabbage Head and Bunny Button. Together Allen and I thumb nailed ideas for proper poses and proportions so that the sculpture would be supportive of its disproportions while maintaining an interesting pose.

I started the process with a drawing of the character in the actual size I wanted the sculpture to be. I used a thick wire and roughly built a skeleton referencing the drawing. Next, I used tin foil to create a basic form for its muscular shape. Once I was satisfied I began laying on sculpty and began to sculpt. Through the process of sculpting I constantly referred to the original drawing. I also used references for muscles and body parts to enhance the character’s realism. Almost every part of the sculpture was hand molded and smoothed. I used sculpting tools for the details in the base and the characters’ heads. I went with a mostly cool color scheme when painting, using colors that I felt reflected the fantasy nature of the sculpture.
