Expectation & Build Up

We meet new people everyday. Bump into them on the street or notice them, while occupied with our daily routine. Most of the time, we get just a glimpse of people that pass us by. Eventually, these strangers will not claim any space in our memories. On the other hand, the people that are near and dear to us will be remembered.

The question is will what happen to the ones that occupy in-between space? Not really close friends or random encounters, more like acquaintances. As an addition, lets define an acquaintance as someone whom you are attracted to. The question remaining is how well will you remember this person.

Well, at the moment you encounter another person your eyes immediately scan the face and the body in order to determine the sex and the potential level of interest of  the other person. Form now on out if we decide to talk to a person we will remain gazing at their faces 90% of the time. Men are equipped with a kind of a tunnel vision ( an ability to spot things at great distances. … referred as  Hunters); they will betray obvious signs of attention while looking at someone, (the signs that are even more obvious if he is trying to do it secretly). Women, on the other hand, have a wider peripheral vision, which extends to at least 45 degrees to each side, above and below (a distinctive close range awareness/vision - Gatherers). As an crucial example, men are known for „checking out“ someone more often than the opposite sex. However, due to the narrow vision they are just easier to ‚catch in the act‘. Meanwhile, women have an advantage the even of they look at you they are still able to do the same thing.

In the end it boils down to is the fact that man‘s vision is much more narrow and focused with a disadvantage of expected and negative outcomes if caught doing something considered aggressive or inappropriate.
As for this project I wanted to explore and visualize the idea of man‘s psyche in the aftermath of a date and a certain amount of time passing until the next one.

The style is based on what a man sees, what he thought he had seen and how he imagines what his date will look like the next time he sees her. As for the visualization, there are 3 elements in each of the 5 steps:

Vector           Female Outline
Paint             Broken off parts
Watercolor    Skin/Entry Point

The outlines of the images, or rather the parts that a man vividly remembers, are outlined in a very detailed and clear way (Vector graphics). The Paint is only at the edge of each composition. It depicts a pronounced break between his actual memories and gaps, that his subconscious is trying to fill in by adding new elements. The Watercolor represents a starting point of his gaze for each image.  For example, the watercolor texture is wrapping around the out or each which is an entry point for each image for the man‘s psyche and for the pintail viewer as well (eye-catcher).

The five images are structured around the idea that a man is taking notice in a woman. They are caught in a moment when he notices her and she notices him (in that order). Both are strangers to each other and everything happens in seconds. He first determines in a fast glance the general body and sex of the person. (1) He predetermine his general interest. Via the peripheral vision he becomes aware of the basic outlines of her body. His male(hunter? you have introduced a definition. Why not to use it? ) vision allows however, allow on a tunnel vision and leaves a huge chuck of the body blurry (What ‘happens’ after however?). (2) He immediately focuses on her eyes as they become the definitive anchor for his social gaze. Due to (?) being aware of her face he stares into her eyes. She notices him and takes a quick look at him (with one eye, while the other one is closed). His focus still rests on her eyes, eager to follow his instincts(I would rather get use of the instincts, unless you clearly define them. It suggests some unrequired obscene hint) and move in a triangle, formed by eyes and lips. (3) Each time he is moving his gaze his narrow vision and attention to detail of his new found interest is forming new compositions. These compositions cut off parts, that are not in a close range of his attention. In his mind the eyes are far away and all that remain (it rhymes, but what does it mean?). Are the bright red lips and the intuiting question of what might lies beyond his focus. (unclear) These intertwined new lines beneath his vision might just catch his attention. Meanwhile, in his head a whole working machinery is determined of following every though and analysis every detail thrown his way. Every part of his brain is set on a millisecond rhythm that retrieves data from his vision and pre-determines  the next move. From the polite and "social gaze" his mind is going down a rabbit hole which is leading downwards from he lips and starting an "intimate gaze" (a metaphor of a rabbit hole is beautiful and intriguing, but how is it all connected to lips? Whose lips – his or hers?). (4) The triangle seems abandoned.  The focus shifts again from eye to eye, but instead of the mouth a downward spiral appears and thus leads to a more intimate gaze. His ‘eye-gesture’ does not go unnoticed.  and hints the name of the gaze it is not polite or but  frowned woman feels uncomfortable and avoids/shields his vision(Is it polite or not? Try to change this part for I am confused). At this point he notices what has been out of focus and reach for him (When did the third ‘he’ joined? Or is it ‘some part of a female face’ acting as an attention point?). Instead of observing separate parts he needs to perceive the whole picture. (5) The moment has been already over. All that remains is the idea of what could have been. From now on the woman will take many shapes in his memory, but none of them will be a true reconstruction of the original. The mind will create any shape or form, according to its own desire, rather than to recall reality.

1. The first gaze that determines the potential interest in another person. We notice an outline and focus is pulled in by social norm and people's eyes. The outline in the image is clear as day. The eye catcher are the eyes. And what we have to leave up to the imagination is whole face that we need a second glance for.

2. Like an anchor or focus point the eyes pulling us in. Even more so when eyes meet. Here it is just the one but it is more than enough. The anchor has been determined and a social glance is established. From one eye to the next. The face is being filled with new details. The outlines get more detail and blanks are filled.

3. From the eyes to the lips and a little hint of might be below and the clear determination of exploring. The lips have become focus and the new eye catcher. The rest of the face suddenly doesn't seem too interesting anymore. More details towards her body seem to have been added.

4. The lines between good behavior and a thirst for the unobtainable seem to blur. His desire will cost him his opportunity. The outlines show where his interests lie. The eyes Cather reach a broad space and her arms are his point of interest or so it seems.

5. As mentioned above the moment has been lost. All that remains are the memories and the vivid additions that our mind adds. The same as if in a distance relationship the expectation of another person reach new heights that reality can not match. We build things up in out heads as we like. In the end the original has been erased and a perfect version of her has been born. The moment is lost but focus remains on what could have been. The eye catcher is her whole body. He shape and form shares as we please and the original seems to be a huge blur that is like a broken reflection of the reality.
