TIMBER !

Behance.net
Timber is a system I have developed for assembling tables and other similar furniture from parts consisting of pure FSC-certified wood. Parts are shaped in a way, that makes assembly and disassembly possible without the use of tools.
Above you see the 10 parts of the Timber table laid out: 4 identical legs, 2 identical crossbars, 2 identical mid-section planks, 2 identical outer planks.
Below a closeup of legs, crossbars and planks. The shape of the rabbets on underside of planks is visible here. Crossbars are shaped to fit inside rabbets in planks.
Below: Crossbars are inserted and locked in place by legs.
Rectangular holes in crossbars and planks are aligned.
Legs are inserted.
It's a table!
Legs are visible as flat rectangles on table surface.
This will be a living piece of furniture as humidity and temperature the planks will try to bend slightly, but the crossbars and legs will bind them to a planar surface. The angle of the legs is a result of the five-axis cnc-milled holes.
The 8 degree angle stabilizes the table and continously tightens the fit.
All above pictures are of the prototype, which may differ slightly from the end product. Pictures of final product will published as soon as good pictures are available to me.Design and system is registered to Julian Kyhl BA2009 00189 and DA 2009 00170. Copyright 2009 Julian Kyhl
This Project will be at Zona Tortona this April as part of the Danish Design Centre's exhibition SHOWHOW to go.
