PUBLICATION LAYOUT
From 2006 to 2015, I had the privilege of managing layout and pre-press aspects of the journal. I prepared this publication for both print and web release. Other services routinely completed on behalf of the NCTA (www.ncta.org) included illustrations and cartoons to accompany articles, image acquisition and editing, photo editing, cover illustration and design, proofing, and copy editing.
ILLUSTRATION
At times, I was contracted to do additional work, such as illustration.
This cartoon was created to accompany an article highlighting inconsistencies with free machine translation.
Due to issues of trademark and copyright, I was asked to create an original vector illustration to accompany this 'how to' article about PDF's.
This illustration was created to accompany an article on trojans and other malware associated with downloadable translation tools.
For this spread, original illustrations were hand-painted in watercolor before text was added using Adobe Illustrator.

While reviewing ads for dimensions and potential press issues was a very regular part of my work, I was also occassionally asked to design or re-design an ad to include in the publication.
Half-page ad created for Judy A. Jenner, linguist and author. This client did not have a photograph of her book, so I had to "construct" a book for her, based on a PDF layout file for the cover. Copy provided by the client.
A half-page (scaled down to 2 column) ad re-created for Kiva. The general appearance was based on an existing ad at the client's request. Higher-resolution photos were acquired and edited for inclusion. The overall layout of the ad was cleaned up and the dimensions of the ad and the text leading were corrected and finessed. Copy provided by the client.
COVER & SPREAD DESIGN
In addition to the use of photographs submitted by NCTA members, I created original cover designs from stock art and public domain pieces in addition to my own original illustrations.
Original vector illustrations were created to tie the cover to the feature article in this issue.
In addition to cover and spread design, I also created the map of Austria (vector illustration) to accompany the article.
Another original vector illustration (cover and matching spread) created in keeping with the theme of the feature article.
