It Started With The Wheel

It Started With the Wheel typographically documents and illustrates the innovative nature of human curiosity documenting every major invention, creation & discovery since the invention of the wheel from 2340 BC to 2011.

The intention was to create an entirely type based info-graphic to organise & celebrate the history of human ingenuity in both a conceptual manner whilst simultaneously highlighting the regional origin of human advancement per continent.

Therefore taking the shape of the wheel - one of the worlds most ingenious discoveries - the shape was created using 4pt type in the typeface Flama, which was chosen for its geometric clean sans serif, and its use in both European and American editorial work. As the basis for this project was to illustrate human innovation, its secondary purpose was to create visual patterns documenting the regional origin of the inventions; therefore colour coding was implemented to categorize each discovery on the basis of which continent it hailed from to create an overall pattern which communicates what continent was most prolific during each time period. As the arrangement of the type allowed for this visual
pattern to form rings of varying greys to illustrate which continent was proficient during each period of time.
