This particular page from The Desert Dispatch in Barstow, CA is a religion page highlighting a story about a nun who inspired an upcoming TV show. Although I am limited by my company's styling rules, I tried to create a soft and inviting layout that draws you in. I used an italic typeface on the headline, that I came up with, to create a sense of nurture that is usually associated with the Catholic sisterhood. I kept to a strict grid and made an intro paragraph popout to draw your eye into the centerpiece.
This sports page is from the Wilmington Star-News. Although sports pages can be very dry, I tried to create a centerpiece that had breakouts and color to make the page a lot more stimulating.
This travel section cover page is from the Leesburg Daily Commercial paper. This page was more of a challenge because it's black and white and finding way to attract the reader can be more difficult. "Cruising the Nile" is italic to play of the relaxation of traveling and enjoying yourself. I wanted the pyramids to be the main photo because of the striking composition. I like the juxtaposition of the byline/intro graph with the subhead, divided by a rule. I chose to run the secondary photo very wide to capture everything that's going on in the photo. Overall I think this black and white page turned out pretty lively.
