Among Nepal’s noted destinations, the city of Patan in the Kathmandu Valley is known for its wide range of cultural wonders. Patan, or Lalitpur (City of Beauty), is one of the three royal cities in the region, and it dates back to the third century B.C. during the reign of the Kirat dynasty.

As a hub of Hindu and Buddhist culture, the city is home to monasteries, temples, and religious art. The famous Patan Durbar Square, which contains a concentration of ancient architecture and art, has been recognized as one of the monument sites in the Kathmandu Valley that jointly became listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Along with the square’s stone baths and pagoda temples, visitors can tour the Patan Museum and view 11th century religious artifacts and bronze statues. Patan also features four unique Ashoka Stupas, which symbolize the Buddhist Wheel of Righteousness, located in the city’s corners at Lagankhel, Pulchowk, Ebahi and Teta.
