Gianni Bianchi's profile

Contemporary Verdi

The following images were realized in2000, as part of a similar exhibition ona different subject, held earlier on atLanghirano.
They are based on the postioningconcept that, in order to familiarizepeople with an unkown area, person oridea, one is to position them with wellknown things, people or activities.

People are often not well acquaintedwith Modern and Contemporary art, whilethe popularity of Giuseppe Verdi amongstItalians is indiscussed. Therefore I imagined to request tovarious famous artists (from theimpressionists to contemporary namessuch as Warhol) to paint a likeness ofthe celebrated Italian composer and thenfigured out how each one would haverepresented him in his own distinctivestyle.

This gimmick makes people who arefamiliar with Verdi's face, feel relaxedand at ease in the face of an unfamilarsubject such as Art, guiding them toapproach, perhaps for the first timeever, a communication with over hundredand fifty years of History of Art, andto take their first step in thisdirection.

The second target was to present amodernized image of the great ItalianMaster, thereby attracting the interestof generations not yet acquainted withthe composer's music.

The large number of visitors attendingthe exhibibitions leads me to believethat a vast step toward such objectiveswas made.

The images, around forty of them, arethe ones originally exhbited in Verdi'sbithplace, Busseto, Italy, in 2001 inoccasion of the famous composercelebrations. They were then exhibitedin various municipal Italian gallerieswith the tour stopping place atDesenzano, well known holiday resort onthe shore of the famous Garda's lake.
.
All the images were realized, printedand hand painted by me with  traditionaltechniques on printing paper Ilford dicm. 50X60, without any use of digitaltechniques.

Thework was performed by the author with acrylics in the style of Warhol'searly manner, where blanks numbered invite the observer to participatein the completion of the work, by figuring out to paint it.
Size 95X38 cm.
Executedin 1999, exhibited for the first time in Busseto in 2000 and then inabout a dozen Italian galleries until the end of 2001.

Paraphrasingone of a famous work of Agnetti, the silhouette of Verdi's most famousportrait is carved to "pierce" the pages of this book. The object was then photographed and the print was hand colored by the author with aniline.
