“Whispers,” a film I co-directed with Seth Epstein, features Jessica Alba as she recounts the whispers of those who consistently doubted her accomplishments, from breaking into the movie industry, to founding her own company, and most importantly, to becoming a mother. Rather than listening to these whispers of doubt, though, Alba responds, “One voice didn’t whisper; it shouted from down deep, and it drowned out all the other voices…And it was my own.” The first challenge of this shoot was in locating a large enough sound stage to hang the giant scrims on which mile stones of Jessica's life would be displayed. Once we found our location, the next challenge was in determining how to best hang the scrims in such a way that the audience could feel lost in the space with her as she recalls these pivotal milestones in her life. To do this, we created a to-scale stage with scrims in 3D before the actual shoot in order to brainstorm as many options as possible. Our time was limited with Jessica and as we wanted to focus on the scrims themselves and not solely on her performance, all of these cherished pieces of home footage and photos were composited in post.
