Waterscape - Nolan Holiday Residence
Janine Stone Young Interior Designer Award 2012 - Runner-up
Swing open the doors of this Auckland apartment and discover a breathtaking panorama - nature’s beauty perfectly captured in an interior space.

Designed for visionary film director, Christopher Nolan (The Batman Trilogy, Inception) and his large family, Waterscape is a holiday home inspired by New Zealand’s magnificent landscape. An interior vertical garden creates a dramatic centre piece to the main living room and features whimsical touches including schools of illuminated fish and undulating mosaic walls echoing a moving ocean.
An island of living plants sits in the center of the room, encircled by schools of brightly-glowing fish as it catches the light.

The entire room seems to float on water as it reflects off the white marble floor that extends beyond the glass wall, creating an almost perfect mirror image.

Nolan is colour blind, so a restrained glacial palette, informed by the natural environment was applied. A mix of textured and smooth surfaces working with matte and gloss finishes create a sophisticated mood to the scheme.
The kitchen is the heart of a home, and this one takes the form of a traditional Maori straw hut, concealed by greenery.

The dining table boasts a locally-sourced solid Matai top. Light from a bespoke chandelier bounces off a mosaic of broken blue glass to create a contoured wall with a wave-like appearance.

The client has great appreciation for architecture; hence much emphasis is placed on structural elements such as walls and floors, while keeping furniture selections simple.
