Soulwave Magazine (Swiss Style)
The surfing magazine Soulwave was created as part of the Master of Creative Arts studies at the
University of Wollongong, NSW. The magazines content explores the concept of ‘Soul Surfing‘;
a process of self-discovery, connection with nature as well as the subculture of surfers in Australia.
The design study involves the development of three distinctly different stylistic approaches, while
considering the design principles involved in editiorial design. One of the three design aesthetics is
the Swiss style, which is represented through minimalism, grid structure and sophisticated
typography to target an audience of surfers between twenty and 35 years old.
The design principles format, grid, typography, photography and image treatment are analysed and brought together in the page layout. The research and design process demonstrates an understanding of the design elements involved in editorial and magazine design.
