Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit – Jeanette Winterson

BRIEF
To design a book cover for 'Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit' by Jeanette Winterson.

ABOUT
This design communicates the themes of the novel through symbolic connotation; using a clean, contemporary style to meet the aims of the brief. Negative space subtly presents a romantic relationship between the two women (defined by slender hands, painted fingernails, long hair and a tiny hourglass waist). The design further features the pink raincoat which is a central theme of the book as it represents gender stereotypes and vibrantly clashes alongside the obvious title association which communicates the conflict of the novel. The hidden 'blue' apple also stands out as a binary opposite to the existing colours and suggests secrets from the church, while the 'pink' sky creates connotations of passion and resistance to the church.
The type has also been designed in an 'old fashioned' textbook style to suggest culturally accepted ideologies, however the graffitied writing demonstrates a difference in opinion and the hand subtly points towards the quote at the bottom of the cover as a bridge to our realm of consciousness.
