Tales of the Otori

Tales of the Otori
Self-initiated project to re-design the Tales of the Otori book series.
The Tales of the Otori, by Lian Hearn, is a historical fantasy series of books set in a fictional feudal era of Japan. There have been many different cover designs, with the books being published worldwide. I wanted to create a unified set of books that reflect the brilliant series, and their relationship to one another.

The white graphics on the front of the books represent a theme within that book. For example, the sword on Across the Nightingale Floor represents honor, hence the tagline "A Tale of Honor". The little heron symbol brings the series together. A heron is the symbol for the Otori who are the main characters of the books, and lend their name to the series' title. I have associated a different colour with each book which is clearly reflected on the spines.

I designed six simple bookmarks to accompany the box set, these feature the clans that appear in the series with their symbols and a small explanation.
