Grimm's Fairy Tales

Grimm’s Fairy Tales
Puffin student design competition 2012.
“Grimm's Fairy Tales has been translated into more than 160 languages and was first published in English in 1812. Puffin will be celebrating the book's 200th anniversary in 2012. Students are invited to design a whole new cover look for this classic, in order to reinvent Grimm's Fairy Tales for a new generation of readers, encouraging children (and adults) to revisit it time and time again, and ensuring that it remains an integral part of childhood.”

Forests and trees have a very strong presence throughout many of the stories and so I chose to feature this across my design. I used monoprintng to create my design; sticking to stark black and white to give the image an eerie and very much skeletal feel. The design has a detachable band that wraps around the book, featuring the title and blurb. When the band is taken away it reveals sinister yellow eyes, within the forest, underneath.
