A Box. Some Sweets. An Invitation.

A direct mailer to our final year exhibition.

The school we all attend is like one big smorgasbord of different creative styles. We are so fundamentally different, but we manage to all have come from the same pot of creative stew. An outsider may be forgiven for thinking that we are, therefore, all the same, but we feel that needs to be corrected. Our concept of Momma Gump’s ‘Box of Chocolates’ is perfect for this brief. We are all different, and we are all in the same box. Some of us may surprise you, and some of us may be exactly what you were expecting. But none of us are average. The sweet attached to each persona was carefully chosen to best represent them.
Our target market comprises creatives who have been in the industry a long time. They’ve seen it all. They know what it takes to make it in the world of advertising, and the also know how to spot people who just won’t. They’ve come into contact with brilliant young minds and helped them create unbelievable work. They’ve seen all the different styles there are. There is nothing out there that they haven’t heard of before. Or so they think.
The senior creatives we speak of are entirely unaware of us, the next instalment of the future. Our styles and thought processes are just that much more awesome than the rest. We break all the preconceived notions in the world. Which is why our proverbial box of chocolates is perfect for the job.

The Precise.
Necessity dictates our direction. We are the ones you can rely on, the ones who remain connected to the ground at all times. You don’t want to take chances, so you choose us. Everything we’ve ever done has been driven by practicality and simplicity. There is no waffling here, no busking, only pure simplicity. Every single thing makes sense, leaves you nodding your head in agreement. Because how could anyone ever disagree with logic?
The Brave.
A passion for the people we do things for. The fire in our bellies is a constant reminder as to why we do the thing we do. Those kadoomps in our hearts fuel us. They are our motivation, our power source. We are not small, we are not timid. We are verbose, emotional. We are a lot. When we are given problems, we don’t shy away and look for another avenue. No. We raise our faces to the rain, and tell the rain to fuck off, because we have work to do. No one else gets the job done like we do. We are the passionate. We are the brave.
The Scatterbrains.
But if you ask us what we’re doing this weekend, we’ll stare at you blankly. The mess on our desks is justified by the fact that everything we’ve ever done, we’ve done at full volume. What’s that? You want to borrow a pen? If you can find one in the depths of this carefully-constructed confusion, you’re welcome to it. We don’t know where our damn pens are. We don’t even know if we’ve ever actually owned any. Don’t worry, if you need something done, we’ll get it done. Just don’t expect to see order reigning here. Chaos is our natural state. Pandemonium is our strategy.
The Spirited.
We wake up in the morning and brush our teeth with an enthusiasm only spoken of in legends. We’ve been known to embrace Mondays with lover’s arms while everyone else is pulling themselves slowly out of the mire of post-weekend depression. We have a laugh that can be heard and recognised in the middle of a rock concert, and an energy that could power the entire country for a few years. And our work… our work is crazy-happy, our goals are cheerfulness and chuckles. We want sprays of flavour in your mind! We want to make your face do things it hasn’t done since you were four! And we will succeed. We are happiness explosions. We are overboard pink. We are awesome – we are Ntswempu.
The Pioneers.
Risk takers, daredevils, madmen. They don’t get it. We’re not like them. We don’t like predictable, and we hate repetition. You wouldn’t settle for mediocrity. So why not change the world? We are the ones who explore the darkness. We take the ship headlong into the Abyss. And we come out of the other side with incomparable knowledge and a story to tell. What is life without a little adventure? If you are expecting safety and security with us, you are going to be in a world of disappointment. We are the boundary breakers, and we are the ones who will rewrite the rule books. Gamblers they call us, but they are wrong. Pioneers, visionaries, adventurers – that is who we are.
The Outsiders.
We’ve only been inside for long enough to know that it wasn’t for us. We never wanted to be inside. Sure, that doesn’t sit well with some people. They think we’re weird, strange, even scary. But we know the truth. We’re different. We’re unusual. We’ve never done things by the book. We have never even read the silly thing. We write our own book every day. Some may think we’re too hard to chew. Others will tell us that orange doesn’t belong with chocolate. Well, screw ‘em, that’s the way we like it.
The Shadow Operators.
He’s a complex man, with a mind that never stops and a mouth that only starts when absolutely necessary. He’s always ticking away, but his façade never shifts. We are that silent operative. Some people talk a big game without ever delivering the goods. We have the goods. We’ve had the goods for years. It’s just that nobody noticed because we didn’t make them a flashy poster. We love to be underestimated, it’s how we get our thrills. We’re 100% sure that at least three people in the building are terrified of us, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Silent, deadly, accurate – yes, that is us.
(In order from left to right)
The Precise.
Waste is irritating. Almost as irritating as needless embellishment.
The Spirited.
Energy. Everything we ever do has energy.
The Brave.
A love for what we do.
The Scatterbrains.
We’ve never missed a deadline.
The Pioneers.
Gamblers. That is what they call us.
The Outsiders.
We’ve been outside for a very long time.
The Shadow Operators.
Something can be said for the silent killer.
