BArch Final Year - Analysis (1 of 3)
My project begins with the exploration of site and its analysis. I start with the book of H.G. Well's 'The Time Machine' and use this as a narrative throughout my project.
I then go on to explore Steampunk and use it as a continuing theme throughout.
Fragments of time displaced and reassembled in order.
The Industrial Revolution was explored and the kind of skills and trades that have since been lost, taking precedence from Steampunk and the narrative.
The site of Sheffield was chosen as it has a rich industrial heritage. Further development was explored through typography, context and layering of the land.
Finding the disused buildings within Sheffield was key to my research. I used a plate of steel, rusted it and then laser cut the buildings that have been untouched onto it. This represents the city ageing around the buildings, forever changing, much like the rust itself.
Through research of Sheffield I found the most interesting area to be that of a disused train station. No longer there, the stations presence can still be seen. Elements of the building can be traces throughout the site which sits on top of a viaduct. Through my exploration I found that alot of areas were cordoned off and removed from public viewing.
Key viewpoints were exposed throughout the site with movement and connection recorded both day and night.
Site exploration took place which recorded my access through the archways and tracked movement throughout the site.
