Book Cover Re-design: Banana Yoshimoto

“Truly happy memories always live on, shining. Over time, one by one, they come back to life.”

Overview:

Applying our knowledge of semiotics by re-designing 3 book covers based on the same series or author. In addition to the book covers we were asked to design 3 spreads of the inner page.

Challenge:

Applying our knowledge of semiotics by redesignnig book covers.

Solution:

Re-designing book covers through integrating the use of semiotics and the appropriate design influences.

Concept:

As an avid reader and collector of books, this had been a project I was very excited for. Easily enough I chose a series of books by a Japanese author called Banana Yoshimoto. Her style and feel of the books were often very mellow and easy to read despite the heavy themes that arise in her stories.

I did a lot of research on what kind of style and feel I wanted her covers to have. Since her stories are often melancholic it made me take influence from music genre’s such as blues and jazz. From there I researched the type of style most jazz albums used to have, and used artists such as Henri Matisse and Saul Bass as my design influences.
