Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit: Book Cover Design

For the brief, we had to create an original book cover design 'Oranges are not the Only Fruit' by Jeanette Winterson. Here, I used a variety of traditional and digital materials and techniques that are valuable to me as a designer.

The main theme I focused on during this project was 'identity' as this depicts the main characters' struggle.

On the cover we can see her surrounded in plants and this transitions onto the back where we can partly see her head and
hands, however her head is a hand-painted grey painted circle, referring to the book when she discovers that ‘nothing is either black and white but grey’. I wanted to tell some kind of story in my piece of work, as the author tells a series of different stories inside based on her own life. The raincoat imagery is symbolism of her taking off the ideals that her mother is forcing and her freedom when she escapes this- I placed it floating, diagonal to the character, it’s much softer and transparent compared
to the rest of the images to show it is behind her, almost like a ghost figure of her old self. The crosses and branches have religious symbolism and the broken branches especially reflect the journey in which she is trying to find her way out of the garden, she is on a journey of self-discovery and searching for her true identity.

As well as the orange and balanced composition of the apple on each side of her, the orange on the back helps balance out the synopsis and also looks like it is weighing her down on the back cover, revealing the meaning of her mother forcing her religious ideals upon her and the heterosexual community it represents, that she is suppressed in. The fruit is heavily communicated on the cover, the two apples represent the story of temptation when eve eats the apple from the tree of knowledge, and there are two apples to depict the lesbian couple. I made Jeanette naked rather than clothed, to
communicate that she is open, bare and vulnerable, using a pale skin tone to help bring out this delicate imagery. This also refers to the theme of sexuality and gender. Her face is hidden as well as body tells us her physical and mental struggle.
The chosen scheme of colours in this design reflect the natural tones of the garden and the delicate topic that is being communicated.
