Final project | العمى | Blindness Synopsis A short animation that sheds light on the indifference and apathy most Lebanese people had towards the 2015 garbage crisis as a result of getting used to the filth after a short while. Statement of Intent The Lebanese people have rarely known Lebanon as a calm or stable country. It is a country that has endured natural disasters, wars, bombings, terrorism, and corruption for decades. However, these misfortunes have created a trait in persons of Lebanese decent, which is indifference. Of course, in the beginning they would react to the situations like any normal human would. However, they always seem to get used to the aggravating circumstances as time passes by, despite the fact that these circumstances would still be the same, if not worse. After getting used to the situations, they develop an indifference. They use their indifference as a means of coping with hardships. Through their indifference, they allow themselves to get over whatever is unjust to them. By doing so, they are able to get back on their feet and go on with their lives as though nothing were wrong. Some might say that this trait is crucial for our survival, especially in a country like ours, since we would go mad were we to fixate on every problem we faced. Nevertheless, others believe that this exact trait is what will kill us. In this film, I would like to shed light on the reality we are living in today. I would like to show the ocean of apathy and indifference the Lebanese people are drowning in, concerning the garbage crisis. We have grown so used to sights and smells of rotting and burning trash in our neighborhoods that we have almost completely blocked the crisis out of our minds. Our brains have registered the visuals of scattered garbage as parts of nature and cities. They have registered the acts of holding our breaths whenever we pass near landfills, or closing the car windows whenever we drive past burning trash, as normal innate reflexes. We are dwelling in a state of utter denial. While some may consider this a way to “get on with our lives”, the truth is, it is the path to the toxic and painful demise of this generation and other generations to come. Read Less
