First Impressions

Complete a research project with a 2,000 word interview
For this brief I wanted to shy away from the boring, same old 'pick a topic and research it' kind of thing. I wanted to do something with more depth that would appeal to everyone.

Although first impression is more of a psychology topic, I am fascinated with people and people watching. I sometimes sit at a coffee shop and try to put a story to thei appearance. By doing this project I could finally see if what I thought about someone was correct or not.

Thinking outside the box I took the brief onboard and decided that interviews are just a series of questions, so I decided to conduct my interview with a number of people about the same topic.I posed the question "what do you think peoples first impressions are of you?", then jotted down their answers, the time and then photographed them.

The design of the book is very clean and precise because the most important part of the book if the people and what they had to say. I did not want to over-design the book and take the emphasis away from the subjects that were interviewed.

To relate this topic to graphic design I came up with the idea that first impressions are very closely linked to visual communication.

The interesting thing about doing this project is that I could notice my perceptions of people and things change.
I began to not pre-judge situations or people, but just go into them with an open mind which has helped me when approaching new design tasks.
