We were given 5 weeks to complete 50 drawings on a chosen theme. My theme was bugs and all kinds of insects that I investigated and spent hours looking in our nature lab. The aim of this assignement was not to represent my observations as accuratelly as possible but to adress issues of line quality, line variation, atmospheric environment, and middle tones created by light and shadow. In that sense, the insects were only a starting point to my investigation, a source of inspiration to find something worth discovering in their tiny, complex form. In my drawings I focused on experimental as well as traditional ways to investigate and represent the things I notice rahter than everything I see. The medium shifted from ink to charcoal to wet charcoal, and mark making and resulted in a series of large scale drawings that I combined my findings and discoveries in terms of technique, space, and value.
