Imaginary Filmstills - Heartland

I wanted to somehow integrate Portuguese poetry with photography, and, while working with the images, I had the idea for subtitles. To create imaginary films, where the characters sometimes say, but usually think, poetry lines. They serve both as a translation of the language, and of my feelings for the poems, if you will.

This is the third series, and was shot entirely in Reigada, the birthplace of my late Grandparents, and where my Mother is now trying to take care of their lands through organic agriculture. It’s a place where I spent many endless childhood Summers, and walking through the very quiet vineyards and staying in their house now had an effect on me I still haven’t been able to clearly understand. There is certainly a connection with the land, the olive groves my Grandmother planted, the vineyards my Grandfather tended, and now the fruit trees and almond trees my Mother is planting. Beautiful nostalgia would probably describe what I feel.

This series has lines by Alberto Caeiro, Eugénio de Andrade, and Sophia de Mello Breyner. This series is completely documental " no actors, no models, just the places and paths and vineyards of Reigada."
