As part of my University course we were asked to design a font inspired by a unique or interesting piece of architecture. I was living in Bristol, England at the time and after walking around the city centre sketching various buildings and bridges I found the curved glass roof of the Cabot Circus shopping centre to be the most unusual of all.
The roof which went on to win a design award is comprised of hundreds of small square shapes. I took of photos of these squares and began creating letterforms based on their arrangements. With my character set complete I used Fonstruct to create 'Blox' (my first font). Shown below are pages from the type specimen booklet I created.
