Natalia Tarnawa | Textiles Project - Rug n°2

Year of creation: 2016
Sizes: paper 140x100 cm, print about 132x92 cm
Technique: reduced linocut + monotype, AP

Ethnic textiles – especially rugs, kilims, carpets and alike – were always a big inspiration for me.

On the one hand: symmetry, patterns, geometric shapes, puzzle-like compositions, fractal self-references, vivid and surprising palettes of colours, modern machine-like processing and repeatability.
On the other: naïve forms, inaccuracies and imperfections, organic distortions, discolourations and damages, traditional craftsmanship with manual techniques.
All that was the most important for me throughout the years of my artistic research and development. Now I decided to refer to them explicitly. Taking direct inspirations from these artefacts, I tried to translate their language into the means and capabilities of the modern linocut printing, mixed with some abstract painting influences, which connection is my primary way of the artistic expression.
