LAND ROVER - OFFENDER

Automotive Design
JAGUAR LAND ROVER - ALIEN PROJECT BRIEF:
The Alien project was completed during a 6 month internship at Jaguar Land Rover, It was inspired
by concept art released for a fictional upcoming Alien movie. Our goal was to design, realise and
animate a Jaguar Land Rover space shuttle into the mood of this universe. This undergraduate project
was a good opportunity to show our creative skills in a coherent working group.

Design, Model, Render and Animate a Armored Personnel Carrier (APC).
The vehicle is a non-combat vehicle and will be used to transport five scientists to an
unknown planet from the ‘mother’ space craft for reconnaissance purposes.

LAND ROVER OFFENDER MKIII
This futuristic planet rover is inspired by the iconic Land Rover Defender. Thanks to its variable pressure tyres and wide stance, this vehicle can ride across a wide range of planet surfaces at high speed. The name Offender is a pun with the original Defender name, in addition to its aggressive look.
The offender is powered by 4 electrical engines located in each hub of the wheels.

MISSION:
By deploying two land scanning drones, the Offender HUE-166 and UKE-80 (two famous defender number plates) will have to locate and collect an artifact to help in the research against the Xenomorph proliferation.

  DESIGN KEYS:
Insisting on some key elements of the Land Rover design DNA,
we also managed to make the design fit into a sci-fi movie.
These two features helped us focus on solid shaped body design
with wide and raised wheel bases.
VEHICLE SPECIFICATION:
Manufacturer: Land Rover Intergalactic Transport Corp
Model: Offender MKIII
Type: Light Weight Reconnaissance Vehicle

CREW / DIMENSIONS:
Capacity: 2 crew passenger / 4m3 cargo
Length: 6696mm       Width: 1524mm        Height: 2676mm
(Vehicle height depends on tire and suspension configuration)

The sketching phase involved the whole team to present their own vision of the design until we picked the one we wanted to develop. Four sketch models were produced digitally (some in polygonal and surfacing software) in order to explore the potential of each shape.
We finally produced to key sketches to help develop the shape of the vehicle with the clay team.

During the clay phase we decided to split the model on two different volume and graphic proposals. It was a good opportunity to see physically and feel the form of the vehicle during its creation. We decided to make a hybrid model using to different wheel arch ideas.

The last phase of modelling on alias helped us to manage the mechanical aspects in depth such as the direction, suspension, wheel rotation and chassis development. It was also a good moment to finalise the design details and graphics.
The final model has been separated in different parts in order to 3D print and mill the scale model.

Sanding…. Sanding…. Again and again!
