Above: Animated chase scene
This short animated sequence is a chase scene featuring the characters of an older Wizard and a young witch. My aim in this work was to practice character performance as well as the use of space and shots in my film-making. This work was supported by a body of development, some of which is featured in this portfolio.
Animated in TVPaint.
Above: Deadbeat; a short animated work.
Deadbeat was a short animated piece put together to master the production pipeline and storytelling in a short amount of time. It was also my first time at collaborating with another animator. I animated the film through peg and paper before we scanned it in and my partner coloured and edited it. While there were occasional issues with miscommunication, working in a team made the work much quicker and the creative process more lively and successful.
Animated on paper, edited in TVPaint.

I deliberately went for contrasting designs to highlight the conflict between them. The wizard hunched, thin and angular while the little Witch is short and circular with some triangles in her design to suggest mischief.
Drawn and edited in Photoshop.

This page displays a sample of work developing the concepts for the design of the little witch. I used conté-crayons and kept it simple, focusing on shapes to get the fun and youthful essence of the character.
Drawn with conté-crayons.

My present aim across the summer is to begin working on a small comic to practice elements of design and storytelling. The young girl above is the protagonist, a decidedly ordinary and quiet character. My aim was to create a memorable enough design while still keeping the appearance of someone who’d be overlooked in a crowd.
Made with pencil, fine-liners, and tonal markers.

For my background I knew I wanted a large grand space, so I made a drawing trip to Bristol Cathedral and made drawings of the interior. I then borrowed elements and explored different ideas until I rested on the idea of a large hall filled with tall pillars for my characters to move between.
Made with pencil, water colours, conté crayons, and photoshop.

My creative work is heavily backed up by traditional observational drawing. I carry a sketchbook with me everywhere and record the interesting things I see around me.
Made with 2B pencil, watercolour, and tonal markers.

These were mostly made from life during a trip to the zoo with the exception of the deer, boar, and galapagos tortoise which was drawn from a taxidermy exhibit.
Made with 2B, 3B, and 6B pencil.

Note:Sustained observational and life drawing has been my core foundation during my creative practice. Over the years I’ve realised that drawing is more than mark making, it’s a way of looking, thinking and understanding. That’s why I believe it’s so important to visual practice, animation among them. The knowledge you gain through observing and drawing are essential when making your own creations. That is why I’ll be studying with medical artist Dr.Jac Saorsa during my gap year before hopefully entering the course.
