THE GOOD JOURNEY
School project submitted to the RSA awards 2011/12

by Mari Eline Boerresen
WRITTEN SUMMARY:
To find out what I wanted to make or do to make people look forward to their daily commute, I took my shoes on and went for a walk. It didn’t take me a long time before I perceived that the pedestrian crossing was a complex. After the observation I decided to do some research about this area and find out what I could do to make people feel safer when crossing the road.
The observation gave me insight and opportunity to use LED light as part of my design. With LED light it will be easier to observe the people before and when they are crossing the road. My insight is mostly based on intuitive but there is also some research on Internet to get inspiration to design and statistics.
In 2009 there was 4,092 loss of lives in pedestrian/ motor vehicle crashes, almost eleven people every day of the year, is an awful toll! This number have to become lower in the future and that is why I think this idea can be a solution for this problem. It will be clear, prominent and easy to observe for motorists and pedestrians. The combination of the frame you walk under before you cross the road, pedestrian signs and crosswalk makes it easier for motorists and pedestrians to communicate. The LED lights are the most important element of this solution and it will always be turned on.Maybe this solution can make people safer when they are crossing the road.
