The Zombie State: Image Development
Some original drafts of the promotional image and collateral design for The Zombie State.
The Zombie State was a new play by Ben Ellis, a Melbourne playwright and Alumni of Union House Theatre.
The play was being produced for the first time by a partnership of two theatre companies...MUSUL's Union House Theatre and the Melbourne Workers Theatre.
The development of the imagery for publicity collateral was developed in conjunction with the producers, theatre artistic director and the director. The design had to sit within the brand guidelines for visual material produced by MU Student Union Ltd.
I had a dual role on the project as Graphic Designer and Brand Manager for MUSUL the parent organisation producing the play.
I read the script and pulled the following words and phrases to translate into images;
Streetscape The hidden workers of Melbourne
Zombie Seagull Threatening/Uncanny Seagull
Off to the side Almost seen
Zombie City objects
Flouro/Neon/Electric—Electricity/Vivid
Themes pulled from the script were;
Brain Dead Shiftworkers
Casino Flames Meat Markdown/Supermarket/lighting
Blinding flash of Orange infused light
Underground Sub Station
This theme was then developed further drafts before approvals, final file set up and printing.
Collateral for the project included
A2 trimmed poster
DL double sided flyer
An invitation wrap around (this was printed on the same A2 sheet as the poster and trimmed from it)
Press ads, programme, web ads, badges
Here are the first initial roughs...the 6 clients agreed on the Zombie Seagull theme... I liked the cold kitchen.
Some of the final collateral is also presented here.
