From Tokyo to Kanazawa- A Visual Journey
My work “From Tokyo to Kanazawa: A visual Journey” is a documentation of my travels through Japan. These still images explore the emotions of wonder from being in a new environment and encapsulate my feelings of loneliness as a traveller in a foreign land. As a Singaporean growing up in China, my family often moved from city to city. Though each relocation meant leaving behind relationships, it also brought me joy from experiencing new places. As an adult I still experience these vary same emotions when traversing the unfamiliar.
I respond to individuals isolated from the crowd and immersed in their own thoughts. I chose to capture each character when they are separated from the outside world by a window, a doorway, a railing, a layer of snow or a water surface. These physical dividers represent the emotional barriers hemming me in and isolating me. Yet at the same time I respond to a wonderment at how each individual inhabits the space they are in. Despite their self contained state, they activate the environment around them and compel me to forever freeze it in time.
