Southern Gulf Fest
A music festival to rejuvenate the Mississippi Gulf Coast
In August 2005, one of the most deadliest and destructive Atlantic hurricanes hit the Gulf Coast of the United States. This category five hurricane was dubbed Katrina and cost over 100 billion dollars in damage to the area of impact. Even though it has been many years since the hurricane hit, the Mississippi Gulf Coast is still trying to revive from its effects. The Mississippi Gulf Coast’s tourist rate has gone down greatly because of the wreckage from the hurricane.

In order to promote the Mississippi Gulf Coast, I wanted to create a campaign for a benefit concert that would be on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The proceeds would go to rebuilding the J. L. Scott Aquarium in Biloxi, MS. This concert would not only help raise money to restore a lost city attraction, but also aim to bring more attention to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and bring back the tourism rate to the coast.

By designing this campaign, I wanted viewers to realize how important design is for promoting an event, as well as the importance of branding. While working on this design campaign, I expect to learn more about social media, distribution, and the effects of them. In order to come to conclusions for this campaign, I plan to use word mapping, brainstorming, design thumbnails, research, and interviewing. Through these methods, I will be able to discover answers to questions and problems that I come across through the design process.
The poster series were very important for not just displaying information easily, but also for showing the brand for the event quickly. The tall format helps to differentiate these from any other concert poster.
Billboards are a great way to advertise and are also really popular on the Mississippi gulf coast. I thought this would be a good chance to utilize this form of advertising.
Wayfinding is very important when it comes to attending an event of this magnitude. Therefore, I thought it would be beneficial to create a map that would be featured on the festival grounds in certain areas.
I wanted to translate the style of the campaign into a magazine editorial. I took basic parts of the branding, (typefaces, colors, textures) and brought them into this layout.
Also, I noticed how plain and unexciting event tickets are designed; therefore, I decided to use my branding in order to make the tickets more interesting. By arranging the tickets with varied forms of the color palette, it makes viewer easily recognize the specific day of their admission.
In order for the consumer to get more information on the event, I designed this website. The site contains information on the history of the event, ordering tickets, the line-up of artists playing, a map of the location, and a list of sponsors.
When I go to music festivals, I always want to go to the merch tents and get a shirt to commemorate the event. I wanted to bring that same feeling to Southern Gulf Fest and came up with this design.
