This is my entry for an illustration exhibition coordinated by Drawn in Bristol, a local group of illustrators. The task was to depict some of the threatened species of flora and fauna of this region for an upcoming event called the BIG Green Week.
Now the interesting part of this project was that I've never done anything non-digital in my life, so this one turned out to be quite the challenge as I had to hand draw the illustration on a piece of wood.
It was great fun though, especially because I decided to use crayons which I haven't touched since kindergarten:)
Preliminary sketch done in illustrator. I figured the totem-style would suit this project quite nicely.
Coloured and slightly modified version of the first draft. I decided to go with fairly vivid colours to maintain the "tribal" look.
A few measurements were needed before getting started
The background was done with spraypaint
For the rest, I printed out stencils which I had to cut out and stick on the wood to achieve the effect I was after. From here on I only used a few crayons.
Phew, the owl's done!
The hair of the otter was quite tricky
The finished piece and those poor crayons:)
