Sh-Boom Soda Fountain

For my senior study, I chose to research and brand a retro drink shop influenced by the principles of Paul Rand and the New York School style: fun, playful, and quirky. Sh-Boom Soda Fountain is located in Greenwich Village, NY, a popular tourist spot in lower Manhattan.

Named after an early doo-wop sound effect, Sh-Boom is a popular tourist and hipster hangout spot. The style references the late 50’s and early 60’s when soda shops became less popular compared to fast food diners. They serve a mixture of modern and classic drinks. Sh-Boom’s goal is to not only create sweet treats, from root beer floats to phosphate sodas, for patrons, but to inform the public about the history of soda culture in America.

On display was various shop artwork, functional items and promotional material. The root beer poster promotes an annual event hosted by Sh-Boom no national ice cream day. The phosphate poster offers information about a drink now foregone, showing potentially harmful ingredients in an excited visual form. The other two posters show the soda culture lingo and various imagery from the soda boom. In these posters, customers from around the world can learn what it means to shake one in the hay, how to find toothpicks, or find and old icon from cartoons or rock-n-roll music. Alongside the posters floats a blinking clock referencing the popular neon clocks; however, constructed from environmentally friendly and modern material, EL wire, lights up a friendly soda jerk welcome.

Disclaimer: There was no soda jerk on duty for this installation.
