In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the classic children's storybook, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, I analyzed the text from three perspectives--philosophically, mathematically and linguistically--to determine the essence of the story is balance learned through concepts of duality. In order for Alice to maintain her emotional and physical balance in chaotic, abstract and nonsensical Wonderland, Alice needs to apply the dual tenets of order, ratio (temper) and logic.
The six-sided, pyramidical sphere appears very unbalanced, but is, in fact, very balanced with a low tipping rate. The three inch die is Alice's smallest incorrect height, but the correct height for the blue caterpillar who is the voice of logic. The dual color, black, is used for both surface and text to represent the lack of color descriptors or adjectives in the text; black being the absence of color in light and all colors in pigment. The die's surface and text textures were chosen to emphasize the duality of Alice's real Victorian world and Wonderland.
