Chuck Jones Auction Painting 2016

Once again, I was happy to be asked to supply a painting for the 2016 Chuck Jones Red Dot Auction. The proceeds to towards the Chuck  Jones Center for Creativity, which I’ve been involved with for about five years now (I think). The cool thing about this auction is that you don’t know who the artist is until after you’ve purchased the canvas.

In previous years, I’ve done watercolor paintings, but this year I wanted to just do a traditional illustration. I chose an iconic photo of Chuck Jones and did an initial sketch in Photoshop, just to get the likeness and composition down. I then transferred it to a 12″ x 12″ canvas that I prepared with a gray-tinted gesso.

I pencilled over the sketch with graphite and black colored pencils, and some brown for some skin tone. I then added some grey acrylic with airbrush for the deeper shadows and the silhouette of Bugs Bunny. Lastly, I used a brush and India ink to accentuate some of the lines.

As of this post, the auction was just last night, so I don’t know yet if it sold. Fingers crossed it made at least the minimum bid for the center.

Here’s the finished piece. For more detais and progress shots, visit my blog.
