Sanjiv Narayan (Abbott)'s profile

Chinese Food Offers More Than Just Rice

Dr. Sanjiv Narayan is a pioneering cardiologist who developed a novel mode of therapy focused on treatment of atrial fibrillation. In 2014, the founders including Dr. Sanjiv Narayan saw the company acquired by Abbott Laboratories in order to expand its potential to achieve higher success rates in treating atrial fibrillation. Outside of his work on Topera and Abbott, Dr. Narayan spends most of his time with his wife and three children. He has an avid appreciation of food, particularly Indian, Thai, and Chinese cuisines.

According to Chef Wang Yixuan, the consultant head chef of Yauatcha India, most people are not aware of the diversity of Chinese food. Most of the time, they think Chinese food is simply Szechaun noodles or chicken fried rice. On the contrary, Chinese food has a vast cultural background with many recipes that were developed thousands of years ago. Authentic Chinese food is still largely unexplored territory, especially since it encompasses hundreds of cooking styles and techniques.

Due to the prevalence of modern Chinese restaurants, people assume that the usual staples like beef with broccoli, chop suey, and egg foo young are authentic Chinese dishes. On the contrary, traditional Chinese food uses more than just a couple of vegetables, and does not utilize sweet sauce as much.

Examples of authentic Chinese food include dishes like gong bao chicken, a Sichuan-style delicacy made with dried chili and fried peanuts. Ma po tofu, another traditional dish, is cooked using pepper powder, which is a one-of-a-kind condiment used in Chuan cuisine. Wontons, a delicacy made using wonton wrapping filled with meat, are a staple in Chinese cuisines as well. Dumplings are more popular in western countries, but wontons have been around since the Tang Dynasty.
