The Big Questions - A Philosophy Series

2nd Year University Project: Final Major (editorial & branding)

It is a known fact that the writing style within philosophy is complex and often hard to understand, causing the subject as a whole to appear hermetic and exclusive to academics. Despite this, thinking philosophically is an enriching skill that is a vital part of our human nature. While convoluted language is a traditional and respected part of philosophical prose, there is certainly scope for simplification to make the study of philosophy more accessible, without dumbing it down.

The Big Questions is a book series that makes philosophical concepts more digestable by stripping it down to the essentials using clear and considered language and iconography. There are five main branches within philosophy, which are represented using different symbols and colours (see breakdown below). Philosophy is all about asking the big questions such as 'What is a work of art?', 'What is the 'right' decision?' and 'What is the mind?', and with hundreds of big questions from the five main branches, you can build up your collection the way you want to and as much as you’d like.

For this project I decided to produce: a ficticious publishing house, 1 complete book (written and illustrated my me), 5 different covers (one for each branch), an extendable case, 5 promotional posters and bookmarks. Presented at the end of year exhibition.
