A Clockwork Orange — Penguin Design Awards 2016

Penguin Design Awards 2016 | Adult Fiction | 3rd Place Winner

Proposed cover for a reprint of the Penguin classic. An embossed representation of the book's now infamous 'Singin' in the Rain' scene, the cover invites the reader to run their fingers of the 'nipples' of the book, or to simply ignore their temptations and begin reading. This is a direct translation of the book's key theme: that the ability to choose between good and evil is a fundamental human right, and to take away one choice diminishes the significance of the other.
The typeface was chosen to reference Alex's attraction towards his own special blend of unruly and frightening violence that seems to give meaning to the life of him and his friends. It's fat, retro, bold and just a tad unhinged, much like the book itself.
The primary colour, the red, was chosen to match the dress of Mrs Alexander, the victim of Alex and his friends' attack, and allures to the acidity and shocking nature of the contents of the book. The flesh works acts to counteract the shockingly bright red, and the orange tint works to tie the two colours together and be visible on either the red or the flesh tints.
