Post-apocolyptic. Intimate. A society de-sensitized to violence.
The political regimes that come and go but never change.
These were the major themes that came out of my discussion with director Samantha Reading prior to shooting the image for Richard III. The titular character – an anti-hero, a Machiavellian politician, a victim of circumstance, depending on who you ask – is our guide through his own story. We are brought into his confidence and left to marvel as he manipulates the world around him to his own advantage.
It became clear immediately that the promotional artwork needed to be arresting and larger than life; hinting at both harshness of Richard’s war-torn world and the intentional manipulation of his own image throughout the play. The audience sees what Richard allows them to see.
