The series of photographs exhibited here has been nominated and awarded the
second prize at the World Photography Awards 2015 – the world’s largest annual
photography contest. The original series is also supplemented with new work that has
been conceived by the author as a reflection of her creative experience in pursuit of
the ways to capture memory and imagination through the medium of photography.
“This body of work, like most, started with a personal story. One summer, just
before my birthday, the family members began asking what I would like as a gift. Our
four year old son overheard those conversations and became worried about what
present he would give me. I remember we have talked about things that we do not
need and heartwarming gifts when my hero decided for himself that he will donate his
collection of sticks. It was one of the most remarkable gifts I have ever received. The
collection of 25 sticks that were brought home one by one during the year from our
daily walks in the city.
Later on I found how many photographs I had taken have in them a child
holding a stick in his hand. I’ve started selecting those photographs. And so the
narrative has begun to emerge.”
