Yes Daddy Yes - Live Session

This is a three-songs video session we recorded with the help of Nicola Palma, who also filmed the band’s videoclip Noah and Antonio Carola, an indipendent videomaker based in Paris. I recorded & mixed the audio, while Davide Barbarulo of 20hz20khz studio took care of the mastering process.
Everything was tracked live, except for the vocals. Since I had to record a lot of channels, I managed to borrow a Motu interface that I plugged in the Adat In of my RME FF800. Drums were recorded with an xy couple (oktava sdc), 57s on snare up & down, rack tom & floor tom, kick drum with an RE20 in and a MJE-K47H out, a small modded condenser on the hihat, bass and acoustic guitar in DI, electric guitar with a 57 and an MJE-K47H for one of each amp. Amps were placed opposite from the drums and facing the corners of the room with a baffle close to their backs to control bleed. I then put a MidSide with the Mid facing the drums and the Side facing the amps, so I had a little bit of natural verb to use while mixing. I indeed didn’t use any plug-in reverb, apart from a simulation of the EMT 240 by PSP Audioware, that has become lately my go-to verb for vocals. We overdubbed vocals with an RE-20 and then Antonio, the videomaker did a great job with the lip-syncing. I mixed itb with my trusty Quested S7 and then Davide Barbarulo at 20hz20Khz mastered the tracks. I have to admit that from a certain point of view some songs sound even better than the record, which we spent way more time on, I guess that if there’s a lesson to be learnt is that some kind of rock music, when the band plays tight is always going to sound better with the musicians playin’ altogether, what do you think?
