Chuck Burke's profile

Design and Art Direction at the Chicago Tribune

At the Chicago Tribune, I was deputy of the newsroom’s editing & presentation department, helping manage more than 70 journalists who designed and edited both the Tribune and dozens of suburban newspaper titles. In this role I was the paper's design director, overseeing our use of typography and illustration. I also tackled tons of hands-on design work, like this Page 1 cover-story package.
The presidential election day edition—the morning when the polls open for voting—is a good opportunity for art direction. After months of featuring the candidates' photos on the front page over and over, I commissioned an illustration to set the stage.
Just Kidding was a magazine supplement for parents that we periodically included as a bonus in the Sunday newspaper. I art directed photo shoots, designed every page, and developed the logo, which we incorporated into all kinds of marketing materials.
The Tribune's photographers are incredible, so I emphasized a design culture in which we a) give them lots of space in the paper, and b) stay out of the way!
