Pirates of the Caribbean // Pirate Discovery
Official Android mobile app for the "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"
The Pirate Discovery App was a fun project that I got to work on with Disney, Verizon Wireless and Tribal Brands (now Tribal Planet). We had about two months, start to finish, to work on this project, including development time. The app launched a couple of months before the movie was released in theatres and lead fans on a digital treasure hunt.
Digital Treasure Hunt
The Digital Treasure hunt was a combination of Trivia Questions, explicit Check-Ins, GPS movements and the first commercial release of Video Identification (Video-ID) on a mobile device. Along the way, Fans were able to win physical Pirates of the Caribbean prizes. They were also able to live-stream the premiere through their mobile device which at the time was a novelty.
Keeping Assets to a Minimum
At the time this app was developed, it was important to keep the initial app download at 5mb (max), this way people could downloaded it with out WiFi access. Because of this limitation, we worked hard to keep our unique assets at a minimum without sacrificing the visual style of the app. The following sheet shows all the unique assets we used to build the entire app.
