My Demons (a visual narrative book)

A  personal project, all the illustrations in this book are hand-drawn because i wanted the character of rawness very fresh and alive in this book made by me.

The issue that I’m dealing with in this book is the emotions and trauma that a person goes through when he/she is abused. I’m looking to understand the psychological aspect of it. I’m taking my readers into the mind of a person who is abused and how that affects and changes her nature.

I believe in some way everyone has been a victim of abuse like verbal, sexual, bullying or cyber bullying. Even the words like ‘dumb’ or ‘useless’ when said repeatedly to a person, can indeed affect her and change the way she thinks or perceive things.

I made a book where I will take you through the mind of an abused victim and show you how some people cope with their situations. I’m narrating the mind of this abused person through my voice.

My protagonist in this book is a woman because I feel at this moment I can connect the most with her.
The demons represent the different kind of abuses that SHE is dealing with.

This book would not have been possible without constant support from my mentor, Alison Brynes and my peers.
I give a special thanks to Rajalaxmi Rajapogal, my peer, who had helped me on the bits of writing and editing, making it look just beautiful than before, and giving me motivation to improve incessantly.

Abuse is increasingly common in today’s time. It’s abuse when people mistreat or misuse other people, showing no concern for their integrity or innate worth as individuals, and in a manner that degrades their well-being. Abusers are only interested in controlling their victims. They use abusive behaviors to manipulate their victims into submission.  Abuse can be of many different forms, such as physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal abuse, abuses on the internet, negligence etc. It could happen to anyone anywhere, including the home (domestic violence, spouse rape), the workplace (sexual harassment), and also in institutionals (elder abuse, bullying).

Abuse is a serious social and cultural problem affecting everyone whether as a victim of abuse, a perpetrator, a friend or a confidant. Victims of abuse often find themselves dealing with serious psychological and physical traumas.

My project is a visual narrative of a person’s abusive experience.
