INSPIRATION
The idea behind the Ø Table is a combination of several sources, first of all, lightness and quiality of materials of the new scandinavian design, functionality about the movement as an atribute & flat packing for convenience reasons.
The result is a two tone, pure wood center table with lift-up capabilities, able to use both for eating purposes and storage underneath.
DESIGN PROCESS
The followed process on this project was not usual for designing, the idea was to create a full design without thinking of the construction process at first, taking in mind that my usual working structure does not include producing a final product.

MECHANISM
The main feature is the lift-up mechanism, created to provide capability to eat from the couch and have some storage, this was achieved by placing two wooden arms on both sides of the table, the four of them are completely symmetrical and are holded by 10mm birch round stick.
None of the movable pieces have any glue on.
MATERIALS
The Ø Table is a combination of only three types of wooden materials, the bottom box of the table, the exterior frame of the top, the whole mechanism and the legs are all made of ash.
The inside of the top’s frame is birch veneer glued to 4mm plywood
The bottom of the central box is made of DM wood composite.
The legs, birch veneer and the DM were stained with Indian Rosewood wood color.
SCALE
The size and scale was one of the main things to think about in the proyect, due to the tables specific need of use.
The table itself measures 45cm, 10 of those used as storeage box.
When open the table top reaches 15cm more in height and 35cm out of he table.
Top view measurements are 102cm by 60cm fot the frame, and 48cm by 90cm fot the storage box.
FEATURES
The table has some specific construction features that make it unique in a matter of use.
The lifting mechanism allows both eating from a low couch or sofa, and adds storage inside the table, it is ideal for small spaces.
The turned legs have special grooves on the top to slide in and out of the frame of the table, allowing it to be flat packed.
The fact that the whole mechanism is made out of wood, makes it easier to fix and maintain.
FINISHING
The table pieces, after being stained, I applied wood finishing oil, in order for the table to have a traditional finishing and a delicate feel on the hands, taking in count that it already gives out a lot of information with the color mix.
The veneer on the top is the critical view point as the centerpiece, the fact that the flames birch veneer was stained and given several coats of oil makes it outstand.
OUTCOME
The best feeling for me as a designer is to have a beautiful, practical and well made product made by myself.
The design process I followed was not the most practical one, but that made me realize all the parts and necessary threatments that wood needs, and the time taken for building a new form.
It also made me focus more on the ammount of work that furniture requires, I think it made more aware of the amount of work this kind of job requires and of course, a better designer.
