Integrated Campaign - Loerie, Gold Pendoring & Overall Student Winner
Presented at Design Indaba 2017

We were tasked with identifying, researching and understanding an NGO or a Cause. Originating a creative idea that could be campaigned across various contact points relevant to the Cause. We decided to focus on the issue of raw sewage being pumped into our oceans. Over 55 million litres of raw sewage is dumped just a kilometer away from Table Bay and False Bay’s coast on a daily basis.
The bacteria in this water can cause diarrhea, vomiting, hepatitis, ear infections and other diseases.

This is a reality that has some of the most damaging effects on our coastline and on our health, yet it has received hardly any attention and no action.

The armband is made out of litmus paper that has the ability to test the E.coli level of ocean water. Once the armband has been used, the litmus paper will change colour according to how badly the coastline is affected with raw sewage. This allows individuals to become aware of when they should or shouldn’t swim, preventing water-borne disease.

THE APP
The Swimming In It app is available to download for surfers, swimmers and locals so that they can be notified of the daily waste condition
at Cape Town beaches.
By tracking the direction of the wind, coastal tides and the storm water runoff, the app will be able to communicate which beaches are safe to
swim at and which are not. This allows for safer swimming and surfing in Cape Town’s waters every single day. Just because you can’t see it
doesn’t mean it’s not there.
Know what you’re swimming in. #SwimmingInIt
DRIVING IN IT
The Swimming In It Truck will drive around popular Cape Town beaches offering information about the raw sewage that is damaging our oceans and our health. The drivers will hand out E.coli testing armbands and answer questions individuals may have regarding the raw sewage situation.

#TaggingIt
Pictures of the armbands are then uploaded to Instagram including #SwimmingInIt
to raise public awareness and therefore getting the municipality to take action.

PRINT
These posters highlight how badly Cape Town’s oceans have been damaged by raw sewage. People are concerned about the food they eat
and what they put inside their bodies, yet don’t know the effect wastewater can have on their health. Each poster states a fact on how much
waste you’ll swallow, swim in and be in contact with during a normal day at the beach.
